Ready-to-book adventures
Day 1: Arrival into Kathmandu.
Meet upon arrival with traditional garland ceremony and transfer to your hotel. We will have a short brief meeting at the hotel and rest a while and in the evening cultural program depicting the folk dances of the various tribes of Nepal followed by an authentic Nepali dinner. Return to hotel for overnight.
Day 2: Phakding (2652 m)
During peak seasons, (March, April, May, September, October and November) the flight to Lukla will be operated from Ramechhap/Manthali due to air traffic expansion. The Manthali/Ramechhap airport is about a 5 hours drive away from Kathmandu.
We may fly directly to Lukla from Kathmandu with helicopter option with extra fare in 5 people sharing basis. On other option we wake up around 2:00 AM take an escorted shuttle to Manthali Airport in a tourist vehicle, and board a 20-minute flight to Lukla. The flight from Kathmandu/Manthali to Lukla (2804 m) has to be one of the most spectacular in the world! After luggage claim and a cup of tea, the trail leads northwest and descends to the Bhote Koshi river. Campsite at Phakding (2652 m) a 3 hours walk.
Day 3: Namche Bazaar (3445 m).
The valley is dotted with small Sherpa settlements. After the national park entry point at Jorsale continue up river and cross the river. Along switchbacks trail while going up the trail to Namche Bazaar there are the first views of Everest (8848 m) and Lhotse
Day 4: Rest Day in Namche Bazaar (Nauje)
In the days of the Sherpa kings, Namche Bazaar [Sherpa = “Nauje”] was the capital of the Khumbu. Through trade with India & Tibet, the Sherpa village of Nauje became a prosperous bazaar on the cold, dry Himalayan frontier. When the Tibet border closed in 1959, Nauje (and most Sherpa trading villages) went into decline. But trekking & climbing services soon replaced mercantile trade as major income producers, and Namche Bazaar bounced back to health in the late ’60’s.
Peopled by world-traveled climbing Sherpas, Nepalese government officials, and scores of international tourists, Namche is beginning to resemble a Swiss resort village! You will find good food, hot showers, moneychangers, peddlers, and many tales of adventure. A day hike west to Thame Gompa [Monastery], while optional, is much recommended for benefit of acclimatization.
Day 5: Namche Bazaar to Dole – 3480 m
The trail rises through scrub and trees rounding the side of the mountain upwards until you reach Mongla, a sweet little village hovering impressively on a ridge that divides two valleys, an stupa welcoming you as you arrive. After a break here, the trail descends 350m through forested switchbacks until it shortly begins to climb again, back up to reach Dole.
Day 6: Dole to Machhermo Machhermo – 3870 m
After a very short descent to cross a stream, you begin the day’s climb along the shrubs and small trees line of what has now become a more unfertile landscape. Today marks your first day above the tree line, and the trail here is generally quiet, save the river thundering far below you to your right. Stay vigilant of seeing Nepal’s national bird, Danphe, which has been spotted in this area. The climb takes you up around 400m before descending another 50m down into Machhermo.
Day 7: Machhermo to Gokyo (Afternoon hike to Gokyo Ri) – 4800 m
You will climb a lot today, but the views are stunning. The 500m you ascend follow alongside the river gorge below. Pass by yaks grazing on up to cross the bridge over the river, which drains from the first of the Gokyo lakes. After a short climb, we will reach the first of the Gokyo Lakes – Longpongo and soon after that the second one – Taboche Tsho. From here, a continued gradual incline takes us to Gokyo village at the banks of the Dudh Pokhari lake with Cho Oyu in the back.
Day 8: Gokyo to Thagnak (Morning hike to Gokyo 4th Lake) 5367 m
Today, we will start with a steep, tough climb to the 5350 m Gokyo Ri peak which offers magnificent views of four of the world’s highest peaks, Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu and Makalu along with Ngozumpa Glacier. After gazing views enough, we return to Gokyo, collect our belongings and head toward the village of Dragnag via crossing the Ngozumpa Glacier. Crossing this section will be a repeated series of ascents and descents around the crevasses of the glacier until you reach the other side.
Day 9: Thagnak to Cho Dzongla via Chola Pass – 4843m
We will begin very early in order to cross Cho La Pass and descend into Dzongla for a well-deserved rest. We begin by following the river and ascending nearly 400m up and out of this valley, immediately descending 150m again down into the next, where we cross moraine. This climb is arduous and slow – make sure to follow your guide, as there is no easily visible trail. Heading to the top, which can be packed snow until you reach the top. Down the other side is a quick, steep descent onto the glacier, which we will traverse until we meet the steep, rocky descent section on the other side. This section of boulders descends more gradual on ridgeline descent before meeting the valley floor. Enjoy your rest at Dzongla tonight – you’ve earned it.
Day 10: Dzongla to Lobuche 4940
We pray for clear skies today, because the views as you ascend and below Dzongla are one of the trek’s best spot. As you round the mountain, the huge lake of Cholatse Tso glitters far below you, and further on, Ama Dablam reveals herself alongside a host of other huge mountains. You’re going to want to keep your camera on you today. Once this panoramic traverse is complete, we reconnect with the main EBC route and climb a sporadic 200 meters uphill to find Loboche.
Day 11: Lobuje to Gorak Shep (5160 m.) & EBC (5385 m.)
Today’s plan depends entirely on the trekkers’ comfort. If people are feeling good, the best possible day involves waking at 6:30 a.m. – not difficult since you will not have slept much at this altitude! Then walk three hours up to Gorak Shep.
If we still feel comfortable, we can continue another three hours up on the strenuous hike to Everest base camp and stay overnight in Gorekshep.
Alternative plans for some or all trekkers include walking from Lobuje to Gorak Shep only, then coming back to Lobuje & winding down to Pheriche; or simply leaving Lobuje in the early morning for a slow & easy descent all the way to Dingboche.
Day 12: Goreshep to Pheriche (4110 m.)
Ideally we would be returning down Kala Pattar by 10 a.m., return to Lobuje by noon, and race downhill drinking the oxygen like exquisite wine, all the way down to Pheriche by early afternoon. A well-deserved toast will be raised by all!
Day 13 -15: The last few days – mainly downhill! – follow the trail through, Tengboche Monastery, Namche Bazaar, and finally to Lukla Airpstrip board an airplane for the 40-minute trip back to Kathmandu.
Day 16: Departure from Kathmandu
Here we come to the end of our memorable trip. We will conclude our Gokyo-EBC-Kalapather Trekking in Kathmandu and proceed to airport for outbound flight back from Nepal. If we have time before our flight back we will explore local markets of Kathmandu on our own if not we will proceed to airport straightaway. We are sure that it’s not our last time in Nepal, see you again !
